Our History
The fou The founder, Dr. Sheba Atieno Okumu, PhD, a Clinical Psychologist had a dream of a world free from abused women and young people. Moved by the psychological and emotional sufferings of women and youth during her practice, she founded the Organization Nyanyenga Safe Homes to provide safe space for women, children and young people who often sought refuge in her home after abuse. Seeing women and young people suffering from stress and depression, children developing mental disorders as a result of traumatic experiences never gave Dr. Sheba peace of mind. This is what translated into her vision to establish and run an organization that would cater for the psychological and emotional needs of children, women and young people victimized by abuse and exploitation. Nyanyenga Safe Homes, one of its kind in the entire Republic of Kenya was registered on the 16th day of October 2020, and has since been rescuing victims of gender based violence and vulnerable population including children, girls, women and youth. Our main objective is to provide psychosocial support, empower, and promote welfare and mental health status of gender based violence victims and vulnerable population, supporting them with post traumatic life coping strategies.
